KUALA LUMPUR: Employers are given a two-month grace period to register their companies and employees with the Social Organization (Socso) before the start of the 14th Ops Kesan in July.

According to Socso Chief Executive Datuk Seri Dr. Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, individuals who register between May 2 to June 30 will be exempt from having to pay any compounds, interest on late contributions, or legal fees, even if they registered and contributed outside of the previously designated registration and contribution period.

Ops Kesan is a yearly, intensified inspection conducted by Socso officers on all registered employers and employees in the country with the goal of finding employers who have not registered their company or employees with Socso.

The operation’s objective is to ensure that all qualified companies, as well as staff, make contributions to Socso, which in turn is used to provide social security benefits for all workers.

Mohammed Azman said that the extended grace period this year was to ensure that all employers and employees would have the opportunity to register in time.

“In previous Ops Kesan operations, we found that there will still be a significant number of employers who were either unaware of the grace period given or learned about it too late, leaving them unable to register in time.

“As such, we plan to utilize all available platforms and hold more awareness campaigns within the next two months to spread awareness of this grace period as much as possible,” he said during a press briefing at Menara Perkeso.

Mohammed Azman reminded that all employers, even those with one employee, were required to register and contribute based on the Employees Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) and the Employment Insurance System Act 2017 (Act 800).

Those who fail to do so after the grace period ends will face compounds of up to RM10,000, or up to two years imprisonment, or both.

6% of Interest on total late payment for each year that contributions were not paid will be charged to employers.

As of March 31, close to 1.15 million active employers have registered under Socso – covering over 9.31 million workers.

However, not all are active contributors to Socso, out of 2.3 million foreign workers registered, only 52% have actively contributed to Socso.

Registration can be made at any Socso office all over the country or through Socso online portal ASSIST, or contact its helpline at 1300 228 000.
