KUALA TERENGGANU | After her husband’s death 21 years ago, a single mother of three finally received her rightful compensation after she was denied the Socso benefits due to her husband’s employer’s failure to make monthly contributions.
A Socso representative presented a check for RM106,732.97 to Zaliha Yunus, 57, from Kampung Surah Haji Yaakub in Kuala Terengganu, in the form of a lump sum settlement including RM1,500 in burial costs, according to Utusan Malaysia.
According to Zaliha, her husband, Ali Embong, who worked as an assistant surveyor in a private firm, died in 2002 from a bacterial infection.
She claimed that despite being listed as a member, she was informed when she went to check his Socso status that no contributions had been made since 1997.
Zaliha adds that she was recently given a good surprise when her relative, a Socso worker, checked the status of her husband’s record once more and discovered that all outstanding payments had been made by the employers in 2017.
She was informed that she would be entitled to the compensation that was owed to her twenty-one years prior.
She had struggled to raise her three children alone on a monthly income of RM100.
“I plan to perform the hajj for myself and my late husband with this compensation,” said Zaliha.
