“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life,” said Dolly Parton the famous American singer. As per Dolly Parton’s advice, a company named MYFREELYS ACADEMY has recently came up with a unique policy known as “Start Work on Time, End Work on Time” to all its employees in its effort to reduce overhead cost and overtime work among its employees.

Working overtime may seemed to benefit both the company and the employees. Working extra hours improves flexibility and the capacity to fulfil growing demand without hiring more employees while the employees received additional pay on top of their salaries. All of this may seem amazing, but working too much overtime has several negative consequences, including increased costs for the company.

MyFreelys Academy realised that the company’s Operating Expenditure increased by almost 75% ever since the amendments to the Employment Act 1955 was enforced on 1st January 2023.

The Management of MyFreelys Academy in this new policy, expects all employees to start work on time and to end work on time at the end of their shifts.

Additionally, employees in Malaysia had a maximum number of weekly working hours of 48 hours previously, according to an announcement made by the Minister of Human Resources, V. Sivakumar, on the Employment Amendment Act 2022; however, beginning January 1, 2023, the maximum number of weekly working hours has been reduced to 45 hours. This directly impacted the employee’s productivity since the total work per week has been reduced by 3 hours and indirectly increased the human resources cost in order to make up for the 3 hours.

On the other hand, working 45 hours each week has several advantages. In that sense employees’ mental health are also checked and they tend to have more relaxing time.

In general, those who usually work long hours tends to get physically and emotionally exhausted.
